Down The Stretch They Come - Kentucky Derby Party Ideas

Yum
Saturday is THE big day for horse race fans!
Quite a stylish sporting event with hats, dresses and blazers.  Have you picked out your outfit yet?  Well, unless you are traveling to Louisville, you will probably be watching in front of your own tv...so hats and dresses not needed unless you really want to dress for the occasion.

So let's test your Kentucky Derby knowledge:

What is the maximum age for a competing horse?
What is the traditional beverage served at the Derby?
What is this race known as?
Has the Derby ever been postponed due to bad weather?

OK. Did you write your answers down?  Here are the answers...
The maximum age for a competing horse is three years.  The race is known as the fastest two minutes in sports and it has never been postponed due to bad weather.  And the traditional beverage is the mint julep.  So how did you do?  Are you pretty knowlegable about the Kentucky Derby?

Speaking of the mint julep, over 120,000 are served annually during the two day period.  Wow!  I am thinking you won't need to make that many, but how fun would it be to have a party and watch the race?!
Our family doesn't need much of a reason to celebrate, so here are some things I am thinking of for my own Kentucky Derby Party.

This is a mocktail mint julep so the whole family can enjoy!  Taste of Home has a simple recipe that includes water, sugar, ginger ale, ice, lemon juice and mint, of course!  Doesn't that sound refreshing?  Click on over for the complete recipe.

If you serve yesterday's Kentucky Derby Hot Brown recipe and some mint juleps, then you MUST have dessert!

Half Baked Harvest has a recipe for Kentucky Derby Pie in bar form.  The secret ingredient...bourbon and pecans...totally Southern!  That will be the finishing touch on your Kentucky Derby Party!

Who is your favorite race horse?
Don't blink or you will miss it!
At least you can make the party last longer than 2 minutes, right?

Celebrate the little things that make life sweet!
Christine
