A tradition in Hawaii is the luau. A luau is a party with lots of food, Hawaiian music and hula dancing. Guest gather together and become ohana (family). Traditionally you can find poi, lots of fresh fruits and kalua pork. A whole pig is smoked all day in a sand pit with salt, banana leaves and koa wood. If your yard is set up for that, I am coming over. The pork is so tender and delicious, but to recreate the slow cooked flavor, I use the crock pot rather than a sand pit in my backyard. The result? Awesome Hawaiian Kalua Pork. Make them as sliders with some Hawaiian Slaw and you will have quite the Hawaiian treat.
Ingredients for Kalua Pork Sliders:
1 2lb pork butt roast
sea salt
2 tsp Liquid Smoke
Directions for Kalua Pork Sliders:
Poke holes all over pork butt roast. Rub with salt on all sides and sprinkle each side with 1 tsp Liquid Smoke. Place in slow cooker (crock pot) for 6-7 hours on low. Shred and place on buns.
Ingredients for Hawaiian Slaw:
1 pkg red cabbage
1/2 cup mayo
1/4 cup crushed, drained pineapple
1 tsp pineapple juice
salt and pepper
Directions for Hawaiian Slaw:
Mix all together and refrigerate until ready for use.
To assemble:
Open mini slider buns. Place shredded meat on buns. Top with Hawaiian Slaw and French Fried Onions.
I am thinking that if you make this, your family may just break out in a hula dance. Cool! No fire tricks, though...dangerous! Anyway, the pork is so tender and you will just love the sweet crunch for the Hawaiian Slaw and French Fried Onions. Yum!
I don't recommend you dig a "sand pit" in your backyard. I am thinking your neighbors may wonder about why you are really digging the "sand pit." Wouldn't want to start rumors, right? Stick with the crock pot...works just fine!

As they say in Hawaii...AAAA-LOOOOOO-HA!
Thanks for being part of my Ohana!
