Watercress Canapes for Tea Time

Since it is almost Mother's Day and I have been all excited about the new royal baby, I thought another tea time treat would be in order.  Having an afternoon tea party for Mother's Day, a bridal shower or a baby shower would be a fun idea.  In my cup of tea, I prefer cream or milk.   I always believed that to be the British way.  Apparently, the habit of putting milk or cream in tea came from the French.  There is also a tea superstition that if you put milk in your tea before the sugar, you may possibly never marry.  Who knew?  As for some tea etiquette, eat savories first, then scones followed by the sweet treats.  Anyhow, since we should begin with the savory, check out this savory tea sandwich...

Watercress Canapes may make you forget about the sweet treats on your tea tray.
The watercress provides a mild peppery flavor paired with the cool cucumbers.

Serve on thin, round slices of white bread...crusts trimmed.
It just wouldn't be a tea sandwich with crusts.

Looks pretty fancy, no?
Must be hard to make...of course not.  Simplicity is important to me!
It's all about taking the ordinary to the extraordinary which is exactly what you can do for your very own afternoon tea party.

adapted from Southern Living May 2012
Ingredients:
1 8 ounce package of cream cheese, softened
2 Tbsp sour cream
2 Tbsp mayonnaise
1  1/4 cup watercress
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
10 slices of thin white bread, crusts removed
1 cucumber sliced thinly
Directions:
In a food processor, blend cream cheese, sour cream and mayonnaise until smooth.  Add the watercress, salt and pepper.
Use a circle cookie cutter or a glass to cut circles out of each thin white slice of bread.  Spread about 1 Tablespoon of cream cheese mixture onto each slice of bread.  Place 3 thin slices of cucumber onto each cream cheese covered slice of bread.  Put a little extra watercress on top of each.

Watercress Canapes for your afternoon tea!  Here's another cool fact.
During Greek times, a cultured person used only three fingers to drink tea.  A commoner would use five.  So, that's how "pinkies up" came about.  It was a sign of elitism.  I am just full of interesting facts today.  I know, consider yourself lucky!  Tee hee hee...But you drink with three or five fingers.  I won't judge.  :)
Come back again!  Wait until you see the sweets round up for Mother's Day!
